Welcome to my website.  Unlike the universe, this website has a purpose: to offer rants, tirades, opinions and discussion about books on Thailand, give an overview of nightlife in Thailand and, yes, to provide a few news items which might not appear elsewhere.  And to have some fun.

Bar, club and restaurant owners who would like to send material on their special events, birthday bashes, anniversary parties, etc., are welcome to do so but please remember men in Thailand are a bit jaded so if you’re just going to offer the usual free gourmet food and free full band entertainment and free beautiful and eager-to-please women, well, the lads have been there, done that. So do try to offer potential patrons something special. ;-)

There is a contest every month when this column appears and the first to answer the question correctly or identify a photograph correctly will receive vouchers worth at least 3,500 baht in food and drink, i.e., 500 baht each, from Larry's Dive, Shadow Bar, The Old Dutch, the Big Mango, The Duke of Wellington pub, Doll House and Bourbon Street Restaurant. The prizes will build up in case anyone doesn't win it immediately so the bonanza for the eventual winner could get quite interesting.  It will double to 7,000 etc.  Second prize is a "I Support Single Moms" T-shirt.  Third prize is an "Explore Your Hidden Self" voucher from the S&M club BarBar.  And please remember a part of all money received from the sale of my books goes to needy Thais (in the form of payment to go go dancers, coyote dancers, waitresses and hostesses).

Paul Spurrier's Wise Advice on Relationships with Thai Bargirls

Don't risk any more than you are prepared to lose - not only financially, but emotionally.

If you have expectations, she will disappoint you. If you have none, she will constantly surprise you.

Accept that you probably have never been as poor as she has, and that you can never really understand how that affects someone.

Understand that due to everything she has been through, in the West she would almost certainly qualify for free psychotherapy - and she may need it.

Understand that she probably will never love you as much as her parents, and that she will always choose them over you, if made to decide.

If you dump her, your life won't change that much. Hers will change utterly..

Her jealousy may be a nuisance to you, but it is a greater burden to her..

If you want her to love you for more than just your money, you have to be able to offer more than just money.

If it doesn't work and you split up, it doesn't mean the relationship was a failure - it was just a temporary success..

Ignore all advice about dating bargirls.

Computer & Visa Problems

As I mentioned last time, Microsoft FrontPage has been making many adjustments and modernizing and apparently both this site and my site have "server extensions," etc., which are being fazed out.  So if you can see this column at all I must thank my friend and computer genius, Chuck Garton, for patiently assisting me in finding a way through the forest to get it up.  And he did that even after I gave the COS (CIA chief of station Bangkok) his name in my novel, Permanent Damage.

My visa problem began late last year when I decided to use the company behind the Chinese embassy to take the passport and get the visa for me.  Don't misunderstand, they did a fine job, better than I asked for, in fact.  I had asked for a one-time visa so when I got the passport back I didn't bother to look at the visa carefully.  If I had I would have seen the Chinese character for "many" duo, presumably what they use for multiple entry.  So I went to Beijing and came back and eventually decided to go into China again, this time Yunnan Province.  So this time I asked for a six-month multiple reentry visa.  Which I got.  So, unbeknown to me, I now had two valid visas into China, the first six-month multiple entry visa still good for three months plus the new six-month multiple reentry visa, good for six months.  And off I flew on THAI to Kunming.

By this time, even I had noticed I had two valid visas and wondered if that would be a problem.  Too much of a good thing.  So, sure enough, at the airport immigration there were four or five manned desks and a guy behind each.  Above and behind all, the obviously big boss observing everything.  And of course the guy behind the desk looked at both my visas and then looked at me and asked me in mandarin why I had two visas.

Several times in China I have been asked something in mandarin and when I eventually ask how they knew I could speak Chinese they always replied, "I can see it in your face."  Oh.  OK, so now I wonder about my late dear old dad and his ethnic background.  Anyway, I replied in my rusty mandarin and was real, real polite.  Nevertheless, he called the big boss over and he explained to the big boss and the big boss looked at the visas then up at my face.  Then made a gesture of dismissal about the whole thing and went back to his post.  And I got in.

But I could tell what the big boss was thinking when he looked at me:  This dumb fuck looks too stupid to be a spy so he must be just a foreign-devil rice bucket.  (A rice bucket or fan tung is a person only good for eating rice.  Yep, that's me, but I did get in.  Score one for the green-eyed, long-nose, foreign-devil from across the Western Ocean.

But when I returned to Bangkok, a worse problem was in store for me.  After waiting behind nearly 30 people in line at Immigration, when it was my turn the guy looked through the passport for my multiple entry visa and found only old ones.  I assured him I had been to Chang Wattana and paid my 3,800 baht for a multiple entry.  He called over - you guessed it - the big boss.

Well, as it turned out, the guy at Chang Wattana had not changed the year on his stamp.  So I had been given a multiple reentry visa not for a year but for something like ten days; which had run out.  So the big boss gave me a 30 day visa and said I would have to go back to Chang Wattana and deal with it within that time.  Chang Wattana is to my mind on the other side of the planet which is why I once flew to Laos instead of trying to find Immigration at Chang Wattana.  But now I have to go out there and hope the guy corrects his error as a woman Immigration officer did once at the old Soi Sam Plue place by simply running a line through it, overstamping it, and initialing it.  Time will tell...

Kind of nice to sit on Soi Cowboy in the early evening and drink a beer and watch the girls coming in, getting ready for work.  And, of course, the girls at Tilac Bar have to find their card and then punch it in the time clock at Sam's 2000.  Nice way to look over what will be available there for the evening.  And, by the way, I had no sooner got back from Thailand then I had two messages from young ladies working in bars.  One wanted to know if I was coming in that evening and the other wanted to know if she could come over.  Well, it's nice to be popular.  Although if the poor girls are after me it must mean the nightlife business in Bangkok is really bad and they have to scrape the bottom of the barrel.  I can almost hear them thinking: "Oh, no, not him.  Well, at least if he hasn't taken any Viagra it will be over fairly quickly."  Poor dancers...

I am very sorry to report that "Doc" Dennis House passed away.  He had been sick for quite some time.  When I returned to Thailand about ten years ago he and a couple of friends set up my old website/radio show  It was a lot of fun and we used to report from a small, cluttered room over Taffy's place in Washington Square (New Square One bar).  The Doc had a lot of good ideas and eventually began doing the website for a hospital chain here in Thailand.  He also made the sounds in the satirical four-minute tape A Bargirl's RevengeThe Doc used to hang out at the Texas Lone Star Saloon with Cowboy Jon who has also passed away.  The ladies there all liked him and he was always happy to buy a drink or two for Khun Bea and the rest of the staff.  Dennis was a fine friend and a good man and he shall be missed.  RIP.

Despite the visa problems described above, it was well worth it.  Yunnan is a beautiful province but as for its "Eternal Springtime" motto, that may be true eleven months of the year but NOT in January.  I stayed in the village of Xizhou, about 25 miles outside of the old town of Dali at the Linden Center, run by an American couple and voted the best hotel in China out of about 40,000.  It has been renovated out of three courtyards in an authentic village and was beautiful.  It would have been perfect if it had had CENTRAL HEATING!!!!!!  Every week there is one night of teaching schoolgirls and I just happened to be in town to give them guidance.  They are filling out applications for Rawhide.  (No, not really.)  The only problem was my lungs were used to Soi Cowboy air and the purity of the air in Yunnan was a bit strange at first.  It took time to get used to.

The bridge in the top row of pictures is about a five minute walk from the Center.  There is also a nearby beautiful blue lake where you can watch Cormorant fishing.  I have figured out that if each person reading this buys six of each of my titles I will have enough to go back for a few days.  Thanks in advance!

The Lindens are thinking of writing a book about the rich history of the place: The Centre's previous owners, the romance involved with the Flying Tigers, Yale-in-China, and the drug trade all make Xizhou a rich source of special stories.   Tied in with the challenges of restoration, relationships with the government, and the local villagers.  Now that should be an interesting book.

Chinatown - Lunar New Year

Bangkok: It is indeed a great Chinatown, especially when the goldshops and sidewalk lucky slogan stands are bustling in preparation for lunar new year celebrations; and wandering around the edges leads to various sights including a park which used to be a prison and a small, award-winning hostel with ten rooms on Soi Sirichai which is all the rage with backpackers, a kind of mini-Khao San Road.  The cafe/hostel has a website at and is said to be very popular on the world hostels site. Bangkok is a great city to wander around in; if you are not doing it, you should. Believe me, it is full of surprises.

Random Thoughts from a Strange Studio

Five thousand blackbirds died in Sweden, and lots of birds dropping in Arkansas and they say 100,000 fish died in the Arkansas River, Thailand's DSI has found five of the Saudi Crown Jewels stolen by the Thai janitor years ago, and I got a fantastic erection the other night without any chemical assistance - surely all these are signs that He Who Has Been Promised is about to reappear.  The Chosen One will soon make his appearance.  Repent.  Prepare.  Sin no more!

Did you see the film The Tourist with Angelina Jolie?  I mean and I mean this honestly, I find a woman with that much makeup on her face scary.  I mean, what is underneath?  Especially in the morning?  Throughout the film she wears a makeup job that certainly took hours to layer on.  If she sat down facing me on a train - unlike Johnny Depp - I would have said "I'm sorry, that seat is taken."  But that's just me.

Floyd Mayweather hit his wife again.  Apparently it is not the first time.  I don't know what the problem is but I wish he would get in the ring with the Filipino and stop bouncing his wife around.  I can honestly say I have never hit a woman in my life.  I hope that doesn't make me a wimp.  OK, my ex-wife did say once that I threw her down on the bed but I claimed I was simply playing "bouncy, bouncy."  Anyway, as a writer, if I am arguing with a woman and I end up hitting her, it means she got the best of me verbally.  And so I had to resort to physical violence.  Not good.  Of course, if a woman hit me, I would hit her back.  But none ever have.  Not counting S&M clubs, of course...

For whatever reason, I wandered into Long Gun last night not having been in there for a year or so.  I was shocked!  The girls dancing are not fat, but BIG.  They are like twice the size of the Rawhide girls.  I suspect khun Mint divides her girls into big and small and separates them into the two bars.  And they were definitely OLDER than the Rawhide girls (well, who isn't?).  It was like wandering into an assisted living club auditorium where the old folks are doing their best to entertain.  They must have been at least 24 and up!  I guess they could be called voluptuous (Sounds like the name of a Filipina I barfined long ago in Manila) but if you like petite, don't bother with Long Gun.  If you like voluptuous, go there.
And if you read the Nation letter to the editor you can read the horror story about the sports editor and his son forced into a car by three police trying to shake them down.  Friends of mine have had their recent unpleasant experiences with Bangkok's Finest trying to shake them down, in one case they would be sued for kidnapping and extortion in any other country.  I would say the Thai police are out of control but when were they ever in control?;poli-30146231.html

By the way, the Year of the Rabbit is coming so don't forget to buy books as gifts, esp. those written by sexpat locals.  And do NOT call it the Chinese New Year.  I used to until my then Korean girlfriend pointed out (with her fists, of course)  that it is also the Korean New Year and should rightly be called the Lunar New year (or whatever).

And whatever you do, around Lunar New Year, do NOT wash your hair because you will be washing out your luck; do not sweep OUT of the house because you will be sweeping out your luck; do not use scissors or knives or sharp objects to cut anything as you will be cutting your luck.  If it is too late and you did these things, you are fucked up for one lunar year.  However, fortunately it is said that by buying novels set in Thailand and China you can get your luck back...

Have you ever sent out an e-mail and wished you could take it back?  Well, I think I have found the ultimate case of someone writing a letter who may have dearly wished he had never sent it.  As you know, Sun Yat-sen (Mandarin: Sun Chong-shan) is known as Kuo Fu, the Father of his Country.  He started something like eleven rebellions against China's last dynasty, the Manchus.  The dynasty fell in 1911, officially in 1912, and Sun Yat-sen became a great leader but died in 1925.

But while he was still desperately struggling to overthrow the Manchus and free his people, he wrote to the British in Hong Kong hoping for support.  This is the reply from the British Colonial Secretary:

In reply to your letter, undated, I am directed to inform you that the Government has no intention of allowing the British Colony of Hong Kong to be used as an asylum for persons engaged in plots and dangerous conspiracies against a friendly neighbouring Empire, and that in view of the part taken by you in such transactions, which you euphemistically term in your letter 'Emancipating your miserable countrymen from the cruel Tartar (Manchu) yoke', you will be arrested if you land in this Colony, under an order of banishment issued against you in 1896.

I have etc.

J.H. Stewart Lockhart

Colonial Secretary

I believe Lockhart lived until 1937 and I know of no public comment from him about his letter.  But Lockhart Road in Hong Kong's Wanchai is no doubt named after him.  I guess the moral is if you send out letters, however you do it, try to keep the egg off your face.

Dear Sir,
Your sports editor wrote a letter about how the Thai police forced him and his son into a car and tried to get his ring off, etc.  This is blatant kidnapping and extortion.  (The same thing has been recently pulled on two farang friends of mine by Thai police in Bangkok.)  My question is: Why is the Nation not running this story on the front page and DEMANDING answers from the police and that those police involved be punished?!
Dean Barrett

The above letter I wrote to the Nation was not published in the Nation.  And they seem to be doing nothing about the case.  I do hope the Nation hasn't lost the cajones it had when it (unlike the Bangkok Post) stood up to Taksin.

Stumble Inn is the new bar between Morning Night & Big Dogs, the old mini-mart shop.  They "hope" to open on the first of February, but not sure.  However they stress they  will be opening VERY SOON.  Also they will be running an opening promotion for at least the next couple of weeks where drink prices will be 65thb for all bottled beers, and 70thb for selected spirits. This will be all day and all night.  Also they will have carling draught at 140 per pint.  (Congratulations to the owner for actually sending me material unasked for; usually getting info out of bar managers/owners is like pulling teeth.  Don't they want to succeed?!)

During the 14 years that I lived in New York City, I became an expert on listening to the sounds of the subway as I climbed the stairs to catch a train.  Other New Yorkers of course also gained expertise in this skill.  So now in Thailand when I am climbing the stairs to catch the Skytrain and I hear my train pulling in, I naturally want to do what all New Yorkers do: run like hell to catch it.  But the Thais, bless them, go on slowly moving up the stairs, talking on their cellphones or to their friends, oblivious or not to the arrival of the train, and generally block my way so that I usually miss the train.

On the one hand I think: this is nice; a nation of people not in a hurry to catch the train, no rushing about, everybody laid back and relaxed.  On the other hand I think: what the hell is the matter with these people; if they don't move damn fast they will miss the train and have to wait around for the next?!

Ah, well, whatever...

Letters from Readers

Hi Dean
I must say that the 'Relationships with Thai Bargirls' piece was absolutely spot-on. A very fine piece of observation.
Bangkok Barry

Paul Spurrier's advice should be included in the application for a Thai visa by any male and the applicant should have to sign it (twice) and notarize it and fold it into the shape of a star, etc., etc. before a visa will be issued.  It is actually very profound.  Mike York

Dear Dean,

I've gotten a good start on reading your January 1 Monthly, am noticing one of

"Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction." (Blaise Pascal, mathematician, 1670)

What is interesting about articles on the mosque to be in Manhattan near the 9/11 site is that they never once mention the original name given to the mosque by Muslims who wanted to build it.  It was called the Cordoba Project.  So called because when Muslims began the invasion and conquest of Spain they built their first mosque at Cordoba.  Mosques are and always have been a sign of triumph over infidels.  Since the 7th century they have been used to plan battles and store weapons.  They are definitely not the same as a church or Buddhist temple.  When they realized some of us infidels knew what it meant they changed the name.  I do not want this mosque built there as many Muslims also have said the same thing as basically "why fan the flames?"  But I see no legal way to stop it.
Far more worrying to me is what Muslims in America are doing to take away our rights such as freedom of expression, etc., and the wimp response of Americans.  New York publishers cancelled books on Islam because as they admitted they fear for their staff.  A play in Cincinnati was not put on because of Muslim objections so it was moved and put on in Manhattan.  Muslim groups are suing anyone who speaks out against Islam including radio hosts.  It is the stealth Jihad going on in America which is the frightening thing.  They now have the numbers so that Muslim Associations on university campuses heckle and threaten speakers who are pro-Israel and many times campus guards have to protect the speakers and at times police have been needed as well.  People are afraid to invite anti-Muslim speakers now.  They can burn our flag and the Bible but we cannot burn their hate-filled Koran (in which we are called monkeys and apes).  And they are doing their best to change the curriculum of our school systems to whitewash Islam.
The Muslim who did the right thing and testified against the cowardly bastard who killed 13 Americans at Ft. Hood says now that his entire Muslim community (in America) has cut him dead.  He did the horrible thing of helping infidels against a Muslim.  Never mind that he was a murderer.   There is not one Muslim country in the world which gives equal rights to its minorities; but when they are in a minority, they demand not just equal but extra rights above everyone else.  Ironically, it is the illegal immigrants from Mexico who are standing up to these arrogant bastards in factories saying no they will not let Muslims tell them when to close for Muslim holidays, etc.
I fought against Muslim fanatics on the streets of New York in 1989 when they wanted to kill Salmon Rushdie for something he wrote.  I woke up to the very real danger of what happens when these screaming, hate-filled assholes have the numbers to cause problems.  When Muslims want to kill writers I take that very personally - as should everyone.
Whether or not they build the mosque is not such an emotional issue with me.  Bleeding heart liberal denials of the fact that Islam is a clear and present danger to a democracy is what puzzles and astonishes me.  Believe me, the more you learn about Islam the more you will come to realize it is not a "religion of peace."  And as real moderate Muslims point out, the more Western liberals deny that their are problems within Islam itself, the more those liberals pull the rug out from the truly moderate Muslims.  And, yes, it is a cliché, but I am a firm believer in the adage that all it takes for evil to triumph is for enough good men to do nothing.

"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog...No stronger retrograde force exists in the world (than Islam)." Winston Churchill

Mohammad Playing with his Six-year-old Bride to Be

The so-called Prophet Muhammad Married a six-year-old named Aisha and had Sex with the girl by the time she was nine (if not before).  Mohammad ordered the death of two poets who mocked him as well as killed many others.  The Koran is full of hate for non-believers which it equates with "evil-doers."  Islam is not a religion: it is a fanatical brotherhood and hate-filled ideology.  The West continues to ignore the fact that Islam is a clear and present danger to anyone who believes in free speech, an independent judiciary, free press, etc., etc.  Self-censorship is now being practiced in Europe and America to appease Muslims.  The more Muslims a country lets in, the more problems it will have.

Raping boys is called "MAN-LOVING DAY"

Is She or isn't he?

"Sexual abuse of boys in the Islamic religious schools known as madrasas is not uncommon, and neither is the rape of boys in Afghanistan, especially on Thursday, known as “man-loving day,” because Friday prayers are thought to absolve a sinner of all his guilt."

"All it takes for evil to triumph is for enough good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke

Ibn Warraq:

The cartoons in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten raise the most important question of our times: freedom of expression. Are we in the west going to cave into pressure from societies with a medieval mindset, or are we going to defend our most precious freedom -- freedom of expression, a freedom for which thousands of people sacrificed their lives? A democracy cannot survive long without freedom of expression, the freedom to argue, to dissent, even to insult and offend...Unless, we show some solidarity, unashamed, noisy, public solidarity with the Danish cartoonists, then the forces that are trying to impose on the Free West a totalitarian ideology will have won; the Islamization of Europe will have begun in earnest.

"I studied the Quran a great deal. I came away from that study with the conviction that there have been few religions in the world as deadly to men as that of is the principal cause of the decadence so visible today in the Muslim world and, though less absurd than the polytheism of old, its social and political tendencies are more to be feared, and I regard it as a form of decadence rather than a form of progress in relation to paganism itself." Alexis de Tocqueville

"All religions take care to silence or to execute those who question them...It has, however, been some time since Judaism and Christianity resorted openly to torture and censorship. Not only did Islam begin by condemning all doubters to eternal fire, but it still claims the right to do so in almost all of its dominions, and still preaches that these same dominions can and must be extended by war." - Christopher Hitchens, God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything

There is not one Muslim country in the world which gives equal rights to non-Muslims but when Muslims enter other countries they demand more than equal rights!  Write your congressman and tell him to stop kowtowing to Muslims.

“Religion is an insult to human dignity.  With or without it, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things.  But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.”        --        by Nobel Laureate physicist Steven Weinberg.

"Mohammad poisoned the sources of human felicity at the fountain, by degrading the condition of the female sex...and he declared undistinguishing and exterminating war, as a part of his religion, against all the rest of mankind. The essence of his doctrine was violence and lust: to exalt the brutal over the spiritual part of human nature" - John Quincy Adams

Now on trial in Holland for "insulting Islam"

    The Islamization of Europe

Muslims are rapidly destroying freedom in Europe and have even brought about self-censorship and real censorship in the United States.  But there is one city in Holland where a new reality can be seen with the naked eye, more than anywhere else. Here, entire neighborhoods look as if they have been lifted from the Middle East, here stand the largest mosques in Europe, here parts of sharia law are applied in the courts and theaters, here many of the women go around veiled, here the mayor is a Muslim, the son of an imam.  This city is Rotterdam, Holland's second largest city by population, and the largest port in Europe by cargo volume.  Europeans, especially politicians, will not lift a finger to fight against Islamofascism.  And future generations will pay the price.

The hate-filled Quran (Koran) consistently uses offending remarks whenever it mentions non-Muslims. It describes non-Muslims as animals (Q.7: 179, Q.25: 44, Q.47: 12). Then it describes the Jews as donkeys Q. 62:5 then as apes and pigs (Q.2: 65, Q. 5:60, Q. 7:166). To be described as an animal is a bad insult in Arabic culture, but pigs, apes and donkeys are particularly bad.  "Religion of Peace," my ass.

Please note, I do not and never would advocate violence against individual Muslims in any community.  For one thing, the guy you beat up with a baseball bat may turn out to have just escaped from some horrible Islamic regime.  Individual violence against Muslims or doing damage to mosques, etc., is just stupid and is also counterproductive as Muslim fanatics will show pictures of that all over the Muslim world to incite people against the West.

A good case can be made that Islam is a fanatical brotherhood masquerading as a religion, and, indeed, the adherents of Islam often act that way.   But, as individuals, a Muslim neighbor might possibly be more honest than a Christian neighbor.  It is only that the Muslim will have been brought up in a religion/brotherhood with a medieval mindset that is centuries behind the times and has a penchant for violence, especially against those who criticize the Koran and other aspects of Islam.   Winning the war against Muslim fanatics will take a long time and be hard-fought but, assuming people wake up to the clear and present danger of Islam, it can and will be won.  But we must demand that more and more moderate Muslims join the fight against fanatical Muslims.   We must demand that our leaders absolutely reject any "compromise" on our right to free expression.  Compromising with the fanatics pulls the rug out from the Muslim moderates desperately trying to reform and secularize Islam.  And we must never bow to Muslim demands to curb our hard-won freedom of expression.   And freedom of expression always includes satire and even insulting satire including satire of glorified tribal myths called religion.

“The religion of the future will be a cosmic religion.  It should transcend a personal god and avoid dogmas and theology.  Covering both the natural and the spiritual, it should be based on a religious sense arising from the experience of all things, natural and spiritual and a meaningful unity.  Buddhism answers this description.  If there is any religion that would cope with modern scientific needs, it would be Buddhism.” - Albert Einstein
