Chapter the Fifth

The Kingdom's Educational System: A Remarkable Discovery & A Strange Hazing Ritual Performed by Young Women

Of the educational system of Thailand, I can say little for I was often confused as to the purpose of it. It is similar to our own in that the early part of a youngster's life is spent in learning. And, indeed, officials concerned with education in The Kingdom of Thailand assured me that nothing in the Kingdom was valued as much as a young person with an independent mind. Again and again I was told: "To seek new ideas, to set new standards, to challenge old concepts, to denounce corruption, to serve the people - these are the goals of our educational system."

I was given some leisure to walk about the university campuses of the Kingdom's best schools and I found a great deal of politeness and respect for teachers which I thought admirable. I must also mention that the uniforms of the female students were a bit of a shock to me as they invariably consisted of tight white blouse and pleated dark blue or black skirt, often rather short. I could not help but wonder how the male students of these places concentrated on their studies but as I am writing for the children of my home planet Candidata I do not wish to indulge in speculation or further comment on this subject.

Nor will I go into detail as to the incident involving the three senior girls who led me into a quiet room and had their way with me. While I vigorously objected to the young women stripping me of my clothes and forcing me to lie down on the floor, they explained that they had never made love with a creature from another planet before and hence it was in fact an educational experiment. In fact, they claimed it was part of the fun of hazing new students, even those from other planets. With that understanding, I then consented to all three of them pursuing their noble goal as I did not wish in any way whatever to obstruct their education.

My confusion came when I later spoke to former students who had attempted to practice the ideals mentioned above once they had become teachers and businessmen and politicians. It seemed they were all now out of a job and had no hope of getting another one. Indeed, there were members of the kingdom who had attempted to implement the goals espoused by the country's politicians and had simply disappeared or else were mysteriously murdered. And, alas, not once was the planner of such a murder apprehended, leaving me to wonder about the sincerity of those who espoused such educational goals.

Yet before I leave the subject of the Kingdom's educational system, I must mention that on many occasions, I remarked to my congenial and well-educated hosts how I admired their learning and their refined manners and how remarkable their public education system must be to produce men and women like themselves. Without exception, my compliment was always accepted with an embarrassed smile and a courteous remark. It was only much later I learned that, in fact, my hosts had been graduated from private schools within the kingdom or, just as often, from schools not within the dominions of Thailand at all.
